A Quran Ijazah is the highest and most honorable certification a Muslim can receive in the recitation and teaching of the Holy Qur’an. It is a certified authorization granted by a qualified Quran teacher (Sheikh) to a student who has mastered the recitation of the Qur’an correctly according to the rules of Tajweed.
This certification is not simply a course completion certificate. A Quran Ijazah carries a connected chain of transmission (Sanad) that goes back from teacher to teacher until it reaches Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself.
The origin of Ijazah goes back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Every year, the Prophet used to recite the Qur’an to Angel Jibreel (Gabriel), reviewing it carefully and accurately. This established the importance of learning and transmitting the Qur’an directly from qualified teachers.
Allah also commanded the Prophet ﷺ to recite the Qur’an to Ubayy ibn Ka'b, one of the greatest companions in Qur’anic recitation. Later, Ubayy ibn Ka'b and other companions recited the Qur’an back to the Prophet ﷺ and taught it to others.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Learn the Qur’an from four: Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, Salim, Mu’adh ibn Jabal, and Ubayy ibn Ka'b.”
The companions then taught the next generation, and generation after generation continued preserving the Qur’an exactly as it was revealed. Through this unbroken chain of recitation and teaching, the Qur’an has reached us today without any loss or change, exactly as Allah promised to preserve it.
For this reason, Muslim scholars paid great attention to the chain of transmission (Sanad). One of the scholars famously said:
“The chain of transmission is the weapon of the believer.”
A Quran Ijazah is considered a testimony and recommendation from the teacher to the student, confirming that the student is qualified to recite and teach the Qur’an correctly. In the early generations, this authorization was given orally, and later it became documented in written certificates.
To receive an Ijazah, the student must recite the entire Qur’an from beginning to end in front of a certified Sheikh with precision, proper Tajweed, and accurate pronunciation. After successfully completing the recitation, the teacher grants the student permission to teach the Qur’an to others.
